Gas Line Sizing
A typical gas tank water heater uses a fraction of the gas a whole-home tankless unit needs at full fire. The existing line to your water heater is often too small, which leads to ignition problems and temperature swings when multiple fixtures run. We calculate the load and upgrade the gas line when required.
Venting Changes
Tankless water heaters generally cannot reuse the old metal flue from a tank. Condensing models vent through PVC and need a condensate drain, while non-condensing models need a vent rated for their exhaust. Where your water heater sits determines the best vent route, so we plan this during the estimate.

Salt Lake Valley water carries a lot of dissolved minerals. In a tankless unit those minerals collect as scale on the heat exchanger, reducing flow and efficiency and triggering error codes. How often should a tankless water heater be descaled in Salt Lake City?

With Salt Lake Valley hard water, we recommend descaling at least once a year. Homes with very hard water, heavy hot water use or no water softener may benefit from more frequent service. Call (385) 455-4700 to schedule a descaling.

Can my existing gas line handle a tankless water heater?

Often it cannot. Whole-home tankless units need much more gas at full fire than a tank water heater, so the line may need to be upsized from the meter or a nearby trunk. We check pipe size, length and the other gas appliances in your home before recommending a unit.

Will a tankless water heater really never run out of hot water?

It will not run out the way a tank does, but it can only heat so many gallons per minute. In winter, when incoming water is colder, that flow rate drops. We size the unit for the number of fixtures you are likely to run at the same time so it keeps up year-round.

Why does my tankless water heater go cold or show an error code?

Common causes include scale buildup on the heat exchanger, a clogged inlet filter, low flow at the fixture, an undersized gas line or a venting problem. Many of these show up as error codes, and a descaling or gas and vent correction often resolves them. We diagnose the cause before replacing any parts.

Is tankless better than a traditional tank water heater?

It depends on your household. Tankless units save space and deliver continuous hot water, but they cost more to install and need yearly maintenance. A tank can be the more practical choice for some homes. We will walk you through both options during your free estimate.
